An invitation to join us...
WHO: ELVIS attorneys are retired from at least 15 years of active legal practice in a wide variety of areas.
WHAT: As part of Marion-Polk Legal Aid Service's pro bono program, we represent seniors, age 60 and above, in simple estate planning and other legal matters, without charge. We staff monthly advice clinics and then follow up with individual representation, drafting simple wills and other basic estate planning documents or pursuing consumer and other civil legal cases.
WHEN: We meet as a group on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 1:15 p.m. at the MPLAS office to review cases, discuss legal issues, and sign up for 2-3 hour shifts at the advice clinics. Many of us travel and pursue other activities, so our time commitment is flexible.
BENEFITS: Benefits of becoming part of the Emeritus volunteer program include:
Collaboration on cases with other volunteers and MPLAS attorneys
Training and access to shared CLE publication resources
PLF coverage provided by MPLAS
Free and reduced-fee CLE registration
Savings from regular Bar dues
Flexible volunteer time commitment
Working and networking with other active-retired attorneys
INFORMATION: For more information, please feel free to attend any of our monthly meetings or contact Michael Keeney, MPLAS Director, at (503) 581-5265, extension 17.
Current ELVIS volunteers with MPLAS' Senior Law Project:
Kathleen Beaufait, David DeMartino, Thomas Higashi, Kay Kinsley, Merrily McCabe, James R. Park, Gearold Sliger, Ronald Talney and John F. Weisser
NOTE: Emeritus attorneys no longer have MCLE requirements. So now there is absolutely no reason for semi-retired attorneys not to join ELVIS at Marion-Polk Legal Aid!
